FAQs

Q: How long does my hair have to be to get my dreadlocks started?

Depends on your hair type! For Caucasian and Asian hair, you'll need at least 10cm to get going. For African hair, we only need about 5cm. Keep in mind that you will lose approximately a third to half of the length of your hair as the individual hairs are bunched up in the dreadlocking process. If you want to keep your length, we would recommend adding dreadlock extensions.

Q: Should I get real or synthetic extensions?

It's totally up to you! Here are some pros and cons to help you decide which is right for you:

Human Hair:

  • Seamless colour and natural texture
  • Will lock firmly with your hair
  • Great longevity - more or less lasts forever!
  • More expensive option

Synthetic Hair:

  • A less expensive option, so it's great if you're looking to keep costs down
  • Good range of colours available to get a close match
  • Has been known to break down over time
  • Can't be dyed
  • Tends to be a little more shiny in appearance, with a different feel to human hair

Q: Some of my dreadlocks broke off! Are you able to reattach them?

Potentially, yes! We will need some loose hair at the end of your dreadlock, and also at the top of the dreadlock we're reattaching. Most of the time we can comb enough out and/or add some extra hair to strengthen the join. Contact us for more info.

Q: How often should I get maintenance done on my dreads?

That's totally up to you, but on average our customers come in about once every 3 months. This is the best way to keep your dreads tidy and the roots intact. It also means your maintenance sessions will be done in about 1-2 hours. We can give you advice on how to maintain your own dreadlocks too. If you haven't had any maintenance done in a while, don't sweat it! We can help you out.

Q: Can I get my dreadlocks done at my house?

We can travel to all Melbourne suburbs and surrounds, but our hourly rate will apply to travel time. Give us a buzz and we'll see what we can sort out for you!

Q: I have dreadlocks that have been made using another technique (such as backcombing or twist 'n' rip) - are you able to help with my dreadlocks?

Most likely, yes we can. Our method can repair, reshape and tidy virtually any dreadlock situation! If you have ever had wax in your dreads, it can be a little more difficult to use the crochet method - but fear not, we can help you to slowly get your dreads locked up, wax-free!

Q: Some of my dreadlocks are getting thin and weak, can you fix this?

Yep! There's a few different ways we can fix this, and we'll be able to determine the best way when you come in for your appointment.

Q: How should I wash my dreadlocks, and how often?

Who started that rumour that dread-heads don't wash their hair?! We recommend you wash your dreads about once a fortnight. There's a range of products especially marketed for dreadlocks (we sell them too!), and just like regular hair, sometimes you end up trying out a few before you find the one that suits your dreads best. BUT do not use a shampoo with silicone / silica in it. That's most of your supermarket brands. Check the ingredients on the back :)
